Small Systems Solutions won a contract to conduct a national study, and formulate a generic framework for the use of Open Source Software (OSS) in Saudi Arabia. The purpose of this Open Source framework is to provide Saudi government agencies, public and private companies, universities and research institutions the guidance on what Open Source Software (OSS) are available, and what suits their businesses, as alternatives to Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software.
The outcome of the framework is to come up with specific technologies – one or two technologies per IT field, as an alternative to the COTS software. The classifications shall cover all support ecosystem components needed to attain a cohesive and complete IT development environment, including software development suites, repositories and version control, testing suites, deployment tools, configuration management, …etc. The framework shall also cover all IT infrastructure components needed to host and operate the firm efficiently and effectively. Such components would include the OS, IT Service Management (ITSM) suite, email service components, account management systems, network services, web services, virtualization and cloud infrastructure, …etc.
Jointly with Red Hat, Small Systems Solutions announced signing the biggest agreement to provide a Saudi Arabian semi-government company with a comprehensive portfolio of Red Hat infrastructure and middleware solutions for the year 2016.
The deal, which has been estimated at 2 million dollars, shall support the firm embracing the unique benefits from using the Open Source solutions, to achieve its high-performing IT infrastructure and private cloud goals.
The agreement includes various Red Hat core technologies that help the firm build an agile, and secure foundation with the features needed for traditional enterprise workloads, including Red Hat Enterprise Server, Red Hat Openstack platform, Red Hat Storage Solutions, and Red Hat CloudForms.
“We are thrilled by this announcement. This agreement is yet another testimonial of how Open Source is well suited for IT enterprises, and is becoming a serious option for running government-grade services nationwide”.
“Our strategy supports the concept of Open Source software, and Linux in particular, and we continue to drive this interest in Saudi Arabia and the region.” Says Dr. Raed Al-Shaikh, Executive Director of Small Systems Solutions.
